On-Site vs. Remote IT Support: Which Does Your Business Need?
"Can you just remote in and fix it?" is one of the most common questions we get — and often the answer is yes. Remote support is faster, cheaper, and perfectly capable of handling most day-to-day software issues. But it isn't the right tool for everything, and knowing the difference can save you time and money.
When remote support works well
Remote support is the right call when the problem lives inside the software layer: a frozen application, a misconfigured setting, a slow computer that needs cleanup, account access issues, or routine Microsoft 365 administration. A technician can connect in, see exactly what you see, and resolve it in minutes — often faster than waiting for someone to drive over.
When you actually need someone on-site
Some problems simply can't be solved from a laptop across town:
- Hardware failures — a dead hard drive, a failing power supply, or a workstation that won't boot needs hands-on diagnosis and physical repair.
- Network and wiring issues — Wi-Fi dead zones, cabling problems, and router or switch placement are physical problems with physical solutions.
- New setups and moves — setting up a new office, relocating equipment, or wiring a new workstation all require someone physically present.
- Peripherals — printers, scanners, and POS hardware are notoriously difficult to diagnose remotely when the issue is mechanical.
- Anything urgent and business-critical — when downtime is actively costing you money, having a technician in the building solving the problem in real time beats a queue of remote troubleshooting steps.
The real answer: you need both
Most businesses don't actually have to choose one model — they need a provider who defaults to whichever is faster for the specific problem, instead of forcing every issue through the same process. A good managed IT partner will resolve what they can remotely in minutes, and show up in person for anything that actually needs it, without you having to argue for a truck roll.
What to look for in a provider
When you're evaluating IT support, ask directly: what's your on-site response time, and is it included or billed separately? A provider that only offers remote support, or treats on-site visits as a rare emergency add-on, will leave you stuck exactly when you need help most.
We do both, as standard
